Is highlighting your hair bad for your hair??

I know that it will damage your hair and I just want to highlight it one time. After I highlight it one ti me I will never highlight it again. My hair is an auburn color and I want to put strawberry blonde highlights in it? What are the risks? I will be taking my hair to a professional but I just wnat to know what you think.

Have a pro do it, then buy whatever conditioner she recommends. The highlighted parts may get dry, but you'll be fine if you take care of it. Just do go too light... the lighter you go, the greater the "lift," the more peroxide needed, the more damage caused!

well, over time if you keep repeating it like 10 times in like 3 years, it will get dryish if you do it yourself with a highlight kit

Coming from someone who has done just about everything to their hair of course it can damage it..doing anything other than washing it can damage your hair. Curling, blow drying and anything else that is un natural can damage your hair. BUT this dosent mean you shouldn't do any of those things. First of all, going to a pro is the best thing to do....(as i have learned box dye is not very reliable and not very good for your hair , esp if you bleach it....colors are fine they don't "strip" your hair...) . you have to take care of your hair no matter what you do ...i blow dry and curl my hair everyday...i bleached it not too long ago..therefore my hair was fried. All you have to do is make sure you put moisture back into your hair. Use a heavy conditioner, or "hair mask" you can get at any salon. or...just condition every day. Even if your hair is naturally oily..you still need to condition, just dont use leave in conditioner. Along with a good shampoo for colored hair, it is always a MUST .....to condition ;-)

well, it can turn out fine and beautiful, but on the other hand it could never get out and you will have it forever! but there is only a 2% change, if that, that it will rune your hair! i wouldn't do it, though i have blond, so that makes a difference!

If you are getting it done professionally and you do not already have other chemical treatments done (perms, dye, relaxers, etc) the damage will be minimal. Do you have hair longer than mid-back? Only truly old hair (more than 2 or 3 years' growth) which is repeatedly highlighted would really show any visible damage.

There are actually benefits of highlights. They will plump up your hair adding volume and they will really add dimention to a good haircut.

I say that if you do it, pay for a quality job and don't be afraid to keep it up if you like the way it looks. If the color difference is subtle, you would be able to go 3 months between touch ups. Four times a year is not going to do much to your hair. Besides, it will always grow back.
